Surgical Technology

The Surgical Technology program is an introduction to the profession of surgical technology and trains students to become entry level surgical technologists, that are integral members of the surgical team who work closely with surgeons, anesthesia care providers, registered nurses and other surgical personnel delivering patient care before, during and after surgery. Students will get Real World Learning opportunities second semester through clinical experiences at St. Mary’s Medical Center.

SURT 100 Introduction to Surgical Technology
SURT 130 Central Services
This a dual enrollment class.  Enrollment through cooperating college is required.

St. Mary's Medical Center in Blue Springs

$60.5 per college credit hour
$150 class fee per dual credit course
Will be billed/paid through the Cooperating College Business Office

SURT 100:  Introduction to the profession of surgical technology, including:

  • Medical terminology
  • Historical aspects of surgery
  • Professional and hospital organizations
  • Ethical and legal issues
  • Physical environment of the surgical suite
  • Roles of the surgical team
  • Legal concepts

SURT 130:  This course prepares students for a career in sterile processing and distribution.  Course preparation includes:

  • Human anatomy and physiology
  • Microbiology and infection control
  • Decontamination
  • Sterilization
  • Surgical instrumentation processing and distribution

In addition, lab applications are provided to enhance your skills.
